Turkish Derby in the Eighth Round of Mediterranean Men&Women Championships


Three way tie after Round Seven

In the seventh  round, IM Esen and IM Doric drew their games and leading with 5.5 points. Krivokapic who won against IM Marzolo has also 5.5 points and  is playing with IM Doric.There is a Turkish derby at the second board between GM Suat Atalık and IM Barış Esen are playing on the second board.

In women's contest, WGM Sedina drew with Nijli and has 5 points as WGM Milliet and IM Atalik have also 5 points. A crucial encounter for the women's championship is the one between Milliet and Atalik in the penultimate round.

Round Seven might be a decisive one for the Meditarreanean Championship since two leader IM Doric and IM Esen are going to be facing each other followed by six other players with 4.5 points including the top seed and the reigning champion GM Atalik and leading player in women's championship WGM Sedina. Hammam Sousse, TUNISIA 26th November – 4th December 2007  doc Download Regulation

The 5th Mediterranean Men and Women Chess Championships will be held in Sousse, Tunisia from Monday 26th November (arrival) to Tuesday 4th December 2007 (departure). Sousse is located 140km south of Tunis and 127 km north of Sfax. The tournament is kindly being organized under the aegis of the Tunisian Chess Federation by Mr Latiri Tahar ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). We have scheduled the event to fit into 2007 to catch up with the MCA calendar as we had been slipping editions into the following year so after these Championships, we will be in line. Once again, several Grandmasters are expected to participate, so a strong competition is anticipated.
2007 World Youth Chess Championships Concluded

The 2007 World Youth Chess Championships which had the highest number of participants in history including 1422 players from 103 countries and about 2600 people including coaches, parents, accompanying persons etc. took place in Kemer, Antalya, Turkey between 17-29 November.


Some notable performances by players from the Mediterranean:

-Silver medalist in Under 18 Boys IM Edouard Romain of France who also achieved a GM norm with 2604 performance
-Bronze medalist in Under 18 Girls, WIM Betül Cemre Yıldız
-Shared first place, fourth after tie-break WFM Kübra Öztürk of Turkey also completed her WIM norms
